Welcome to the new school year everyone.  It is great to see the children excited about their learning and happily coming to school each day.
This term we are focusing on getting to know each other and our school community.  We have been playing at the big school each Morning Tea time and participating in PE, Health and Music Lessons during the week with our specialist teachers.
What are we doing in Prep this term?
This term we are learning about our families.  We are talking about what makes families special and will discuss similarities and differences between our own, and other families we know.
We would really appreciate a few family photographs to discuss in class time.  Pictures of Mum, Dad, siblings, grandparents and perhaps a baby photograph would be wonderful.
In Science we will learn all about living things.  We will discuss our senses and the important part they play in the survival of plants and animals.  I would like to bring in some Mealworms for the children to observe over the duration of the term.  Their lifecycle is fast and they are hardy ‘pets’ for an active classroom.
In English, our main focus will be on getting to know the letters and sounds in the alphabet.  We will also introduce our yellow and blue sight words and share many stories together to stimulate our conversations and writing experiences.
Mathematics is always a little difficult to write about because there are so many concepts being explored each week.  Topics will include, counting, sorting, measuring and making patters.
We will undertake a mathematical investigation towards the middle of the term called Oz Animal Olympics.  Students will apply the concepts of counting, ordinal numbers, positional language and graphing as they negotiate, plan, participate in and collect and record data.  Throughout the term, we will be completing assessment tasks and monitoring your child’s development.
Please come in and take a few moments to read the Assessment Information for each learning area.  They are on the walls around Prep.  And finally….
Please note that homework is important.  It often reinforces what we are learning in class each week.  Your child will take their homework folder home each MONDAY AFTERNOON and return it to school each FRIDAY MORNING.
Have a great term everyone.  Remember to come inside and see the wonderful work your child is doing each week.  Work is often glued into scrapbooks or displayed around the room.
Kind regards,
Miss Mathews
