PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Charters Towers Central State School is the ‘country school in the centre of town’. We at Central are very proud of the fact that our school is small enough that our children, parents and staff know each other, yet we are big enough to offer very strong educational programs. ‘Central’ has a real country school feel about it.
Charters Towers Central State School has 18 teachers (including part-time and specialist staff), 11 teacher-aides and 14 non-teaching staff. This includes staffing for the Special Education Unit and a part time Preschool. Our staff has a good mix of experience and backgrounds. Many with significant experience and expertise over lengthy careers and others, recently out of university with a wealth of enthusiasm and fresh and innovative ideas.
The ‘Central’ State School Community recognises the local Kudjala People as the traditional peoples of this area and appreciates the important cultural ties they provide to our whole community.
As a member school of ACTSS, (Alliance of Charters Towers State Schools), we are heavily involved in planning educational service delivery within Charters Towers Educational Community and ‘Central’ enjoys a strongly positive and supportive working relationship with the other state school sites in our community.
Reading is a major focus for our students as learners. We have "literacy" blocks in our class timetables and we urge students to read for at least 15 minutes at home every night.
‘ Central’ operates on The New Basics Curriculum that prepares students to be life-long learners and we will continue to improve and develop the model that operates within the Alliance. The schools in the Alliance have aligned curriculum and many operational activities. This ensures that we are working with the other state schools towards common goals for the benefit of all our students.
Highlights of the school year include the Athletics and Cross-Country Carnivals, ‘Showcase’ the Year 6/7 Multicultural Festival, the School fete, the Canberra Trip for Year Sevens and visits from sporting teams like the North Queensland Cowboys and Townsville Rugby Union.
The school operates on funds from Education Queensland and the school’s Parents and Citizen’s Association. The P&C meets on the second Tuesday of every month here at the school and assists on many fronts and this has included direct and indirect support of learning and teaching.
The school has an up-to-date Behaviour Management Program that reflects the ideals of the theorist William Glasser. Processes have been written to cover both classroom and playground behaviour. The Code of Behaviour is the basis for Classroom rules. This Code emphasises that students are responsible for all that they say and do.
‘Central’ has two adopt-a-cops who visit the school on a formal and informal basis. The role of ‘Constable Dave’ and ‘Constable Tricia’ is primarily to interact with students. They also present specialized information within regular class activities and also attend Friday Afternoon Assemblies wherever possible.
A breakfast program and after school care also operate at ‘Central’ thanks to the work of volunteers, the CDEP, the local Police Service and the school.
Further developments at Central in information and computer technology will be rolled out with a fully operational computer lab and the provision of system technical support through ACTSS and on-site technical support. We will continue to upgrade our hardware and develop our local area networks on site so that our students have access to quality technology.
This year we will of course also be preparing for the introduction of the preparatory year for 2007. Preschool will be phased out in favour of a full-time year of schooling that precedes Year 1.
If you are new to our school, welcome and we look forward to working with you for the benefit of our students and the whole school community.
