From the Principal
We are nearly half way through the term already and it is great to see the students settling into the school routines so well. The students are showing some very positive behaviours and are working well in class. I am very passionate about the importance of getting a good education, however the school can not do it alone. There needs to be a team approach with the family and the school working together if we are really going to make a difference.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have had a few parents (and grandparents) contact the school to raise concerns about behaviour. I would like to thank them, both for their time and the manner in which it occurred. As I have said previously, often the parents/caregivers are the first people that hear about issues that are upsetting their children. If you let us know early, we can then deal with it, before it becomes a pattern of behaviour.
I strongly believe that school should be a place where every student feels safe and happy, because it is only then that students can reach their full potential. As part of ensuring every child is safe and happy, we are encouraging every child to follow the “Golden Rule”.
The Golden Rule has many different forms; however the one I like was from Confucius. His words were “Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself”.
Here at Central, we are actively encouraging students to treat others as they would like to be treated. One example of this is that no child
(or adult) likes to be belittled, sworn at or threatened; therefore no child (or adult) should belittle, swear at or threaten another person.
If you can encourage your child to follow the Golden Rule, it would be greatly appreciated.
Inappropriate Behaviour on the way to or from School
According to the Education General Provisions Act, the school and the home have a shared responsibility when it comes to the journey to and from school. This also means that we are both responsible for their behaviour on the way to and from school. If students are doing the wrong thing before or after school, and this behaviour is reported to the school, then I will investigate the matter and appropriate consequences will occur, if required.
Every day counts at our school
Our school encourages all parents and members of our community to support the new State Government initiative to improve student attendance.
The program – Every Day Counts – has four key messages:
· all children should be enrolled and attend school on every school day
· schools should monitor and create ways to improve attendance in schools
· attendance is the responsibility of everyone in the community
· children may find themselves in unsafe situations if they choose not to attend or skip school.
While most students attend school consistently, there is a small number of students who are absent from school without an acceptable reason and this may harm their education.
Going shopping, visiting family, staying up late and being tired or extending school holidays are not acceptable reasons to be away from school.
Research shows that if your child has a record of good attendance, they are more likely to achieve high results in the future.
If your child is away, you need to let the school know the reasons beforehand, or within two days of returning to school.
For more information or if you need support regarding your child’s attendance, see our school principal and download the guide for parents at: www.education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/
Miss Williamson
Prep and grade one has been very busy over the past 2 weeks. Prep has learnt the sounds for i and p and have made lots of fun things like an Indian headband, inky mask, popcorn and a prince/princess crown. Grade one has been working hard in reading groups with Miss Reid’s 1/2 class and have done some fantastic writing this week. During maths groups we have
explored the numbers 0-9 and looked at patterns. We made some patterned pasta necklaces and coloured some of our own patterns.
We have all looked at living and non-living things and how they are different. We have discussed what living things need to survive and we can’t wait to see what our new classroom pet is! They will arrive in our classroom on Friday… I wonder what it could be?
Miss Reid
Year 1/2 have quickly settled into their new routines since the change in Week 4. Miss Reid has been very impressed with how well the ones and twos have been working together, and would like to say a big thank you to the students for their efforts in working independently and quietly when Miss Reid is teaching the other grade. Miss Reid would also like to thank the three parent helpers who have been coming in - she couldn't do it without you! Year 1/2 have started their unit You + Me = Us and have been looking at how they are the same and different to other people and families with some interesting discoveries. They have been working on reading strategies, writing skills such as sounding out and having a go and also looking at numbers, including ordering and subtraction. Year 1/2 is certainly a busy place with
lots to fit into the day - the term is flying by.
SEP Junior
Week 5, halfway through first term. Wow!
Once again, we have become the all boys’ class. There are 5 boys in the class, now. Sadly we lost our one girl but we get to see her at lunch times.
This week the boys have been learning about 'an' & 'at' word families.
We are also about to embark on a schoolyard safari. Before we do, we must do a little background work and learn about the animals we may find out there. The boys have produced some pictures of these animals - they made a fly picture by adding wings to a tennis ball print!
In cooking we made ants on a log. Ask the boys about that one!!
Teaching arrangements have changed, Mrs Thomas is cutting back on her days. She will no longer teach for 5 days but for 3 days. Mr Thomas is coming in for the other 2 days. On the days Mr Thomas comes in there will be plenty of guitar tunes to be heard - the boys love it!!
Miss Ladds
In 2/3 this week we have been beginning our new unit called “My Special Place”. We have discussed where our special places are at home, at school and in the community. Also we have been learning about Aboriginals and their
concept of sacred or special places.
Next Tuesday March 3rd I will be holding an information session for parents. I will outline a lot of details about the classroom and routines. If you can attend the session will be held between 3:15 and 3:45.
Finally, some students still do not have their equipment at school. When a student does not have adequate equipment this makes it difficult for the child to learn. Can all equipment; including a ream of paper, tissues and an art shirt please be brought in as soon as possible. If you are unsure what your child needs please contact me and I can outline what is required.
SEP Miss Haigh
To enhance our reading achievement, Miss Haigh has been teaching us the SWAT technique. This technique requires us to ask 3 questions to help SWAT away a tricky word.
1.. What would make sense here and start like that?
2. Does that word make sense?
3. If it is X, what other letters would I expect to see?
So don't be alarmed if you come in for a visit and we are armed with swatters, we are just attacking the tricky words and having fun while reading!!
Mrs Staub
Another fortnight already, time seems to be flying and
we have so much we want to do before the holidays!
Over the last few weeks I have been off class several days to attend Professional Development training in Literacy, only one more session to attend and we can really get things buzzing with our approach to literacy learning and learners.
The Yr 3/4/5 class are mastering the art of a Transitivity Analysis and can already find the Process, Participant and Circumstance in a sentence. They are using this knowledge to help understand the construction of great sentences and to make them better writers. We will also be looking selecting the nominal groups and following up with nominalisation.
This may all sound new, however, if you are familiar with terms in grammar this is simply applying and using the technical vocabulary with the class on a regular basis.
Mrs Green
The last two weeks theyear 5/6 class have been working on their field study unit. We have learnt the difference about vertebrates and invertebrates and what animals are classified in each of these areas. In this unit we have to investigate different animal species in the school and identify what those animals need to survive. During our observation lessons, we have
discovered many interesting species within our school.
Before these sessions occur we discuss the safety precautions that we must take when participating in a field study. All the children are excited about the unit and we have discovered many interesting things.
During writing lessons this week we have been writing stories about finding something. All the students have written creative stories and we are currently publishing them in the computer lab. Once everyone has completed publishing their stories I will construct a class book, which the students can access and enjoy reading.
SEP Mrs Wood-Brown
Well, this week has been busy for us all. We have been rounding off the 'food' side of our Nutrition unit and getting ready to begin the 'active' side. We really enjoyed doing the cooking for the Parent evening and had a party of our own with the left over food. The recipes we chose were all healthy, fitted in with our healthy eating school and with what we have learnt in our unit.
Mr. Brown came up and helped, as Mrs. Wood-Brown, isn't great in the kitchen. He was fantastic. Thank you Mr. Brown.
Mrs. Wood-Brown is persisting with getting us to do movement. We have decided not to complain about it, in the hope that
she will stop. Cross your fingers for us.
Mr Crow
We have welcomed six new students to our class since our last article in the newsletter. They appear to have settled in well and have adjusted to our way of doing things.
In the past fortnight the students have been unravelling the mysteries of fractions in numeracy, learning how to construct arguments in literacy, researching non-renewable resources on the internet, discovering how friction influences the braking of a motor car and improving their drawing ability. A self portrait is the next challenge!!!
Our Student Leaders have lead a busy life with an invitation to attend the High School Leaders Induction ceremony, a trip to Paluma Education Centre for Leadership Camp (Royden Robertson and Jemima Wehrman) and the trialling of a new assembly format.
Many more of the students are taking the opportunity to enter the room before school to complete homework or to develop their problem solving skills using the many games involved. Rush Hour seems to be the most popular.
SEP Troy Barath
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of
those parents who attended the Special Education
information night on Wednesday night. I hope
the evening was informative for all who attended and it gave you a chance to meet all of the teachers from the Special Education Program.
Something that came out of the evening was a request for any parents to come into the SEP and help out in any way they can. If you have a special talent or skill then please come in and let us know.
We would love to have you come into the school and work with the kids. It does not necessarily have to be with your child’s class but it could be with any group of students who will benefit the most from your help. If you would just like to volunteer to come in and assist the students with reading or support in the classroom you are more than welcome. Please contact myself or one of the SEP teachers if you think you could be of assistance. We look forward to hearing from you.

Rugby League
Central defeated BTC last Friday in the first game of the season 20 points to 4. For a couple of our players it was there first game of league. If the smiles on their faces were an indication of their enjoyment of the game ….it won’t be their last. The team performed well
defensively while some attacking brilliance and hard
running by individuals lead to our tries.
While the whole team deserves congratulations, Abraham Hunter (Man of the Match), Floyd Huxley-Aglinskas and Rex James deserve a special mention for their contributions. Well done team! Our next game is this Friday against Millchester at Friemann Oval commencing at 1.15 pm. Thank you to the parents who supported the team last week.
Netball
Central netball girls stepped onto the court with enthusiasm and confidents. We had a good game we won 12-6 against BTC. We’d like to give a special mention to BTC for a great game, Miss Madsen and Louise Hunter as our captain. Miss Madsen would like to congratulate Jayleen Masso, Dempsey Currin and Bronie` Huxley whom also impressed.
